MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester Community College is adding a course of study devoted to social media expertise.
Information sessions to help introduce students to MCC’s new Social Media Specialist certificate program are scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, from 11 to 11:30 a,m, and Tuesday, May 7, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Fall 2019 courses leading to the certificate are now open for registration. Pre-registration for one or the other of the sessions is encouraged. To do so visit www.manchestercc.edu/info.
According to a course of study outline, a social media specialist is responsible for planning, implementing and monitoring a company’s social media strategy to increase brand awareness through technology and marketing strategies.
The new certification program is designed to provide relevant training in key areas such as website design, social media, consumer behavior, search engine optimization and project management. The 19-credit program can be completed in less time than an associate degree — as little as a year. It is focused on developing and strengthening occupational skills. Working professionals can build upon existing skills or retrain for new career opportunities., according to a program outline.
“We get inquiries from small businesses who are looking to hire an office manager and they want someone to come in and manage their social media,” according to Professor Sandra Rimetz, who coordinates the program.
“This certificate can serve as a retraining tool for people who’ve entered the workforce or for those who find that their job skills need updating,” she said. “When paired with a two-year or four-year diploma, this social media specialist certificate adds to one’s credentials.”
The certificate can also be pursued as part of MCC’s Management Information Systems, A.S.; Accounting and Business Administration Transfer, A.S.; and Marketing A.S. degrees.
