Oracle Autonomous Linux OS has been announced to simplify cloud computing needs for server-side computers. It is the world’s first autonomous operating system and comes with Oracle OS management services.
Oracle Autonomous Linux OS will mainly be used as a server-side solution on an enterprise scale. This Linux OS will provide a great deal of elasticity and peace of mind in maintaining cloud servers.
It is mainly employed to make the process of patching, scaling, and maintaining cloud servers completely autonomous.
Commenting on the occasion, Wim Coekaerts, Senior Vice-President of Operating Systems and Virtualization Engineering, Oracle, said, “Today we are taking the next step in our autonomous strategy with Oracle Autonomous Linux.”
Linux-Based Oracle Autonomous OS
Oracle introduced the first Commercial Relation Database for Linux back in 1998. Now, after two decades, the company has brought in a fully automated cloud OS that seeks to free up precious IT resources for more strategic tasks.
According to the company, the new automated OS can offer monitoring capability and control over systems no matter if they run Linux, Windows or the latest Autonomous Linux.
With the help of machine learning, the cloud infrastructure API can perform automated patching, security reporting, and configuration management.
The main features of the Linux-based Oracle Autonomous OS include:
- Automatic patching and tuning along with generating OS diagnostic reports
- Keeping Linux Kernal and Key User Library safe through automated security patch installation on a daily basis. Also granting protection from internal and external malware attacks by blocking any known exploits.
- Eliminating unnecessary downtime in all processes.
While scaling up or down the OS management service can be automated similar to auto-scaling to reduce human workload.
Oracle Autonomous Linux and OS Management services come included in the Oracle Premier support, which is an enterprise-class support service. According to an estimate by the company, “Most Linux workload customers” can see a 30-50% savings in Total Cost of Ownership.
Further commenting on the new Automated OS, Al Gillen, Group VP, Software Development and Open Source, IDC said, “This capability effectively turns Oracle Linux into a service, freeing customers to focus their IT resources on application and user experience.”
