Today’s Doodle celebrates a pioneering woman in mountaineering, Junko Tabei.

Who was Junko Tabei?

Junko Tabei was a Japanese mountaineer.

Google Doodle is celebrating her 80th birthday today (22 September) and honouring her accomplishments.

Junko Tabei was the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, having successfully scaled the peak in 1975.

Not only was she the first woman to conquer Everest, she was the first woman to ascend all Seven Summits by climbing the highest peak on every continent.

How old was Junko Tabei when she climbed Everest?

Junko Tabei conquered Everest at the age of 36.

In addition to her personal triumphs, she’s known for forming the Ladies Climbing Club – the first of its kind in Japan.

What was Junko Tabei’s cause of death?

She died of complications from stomach cancer.

She died aged 77 in 2016.
