It’s a php[world], and We’re Going to It

Celebrating 25 historic years of PHP, php[world] is happening next week, October 22-24, 2019 in Washington, D.C. Featuring a keynote session by Samantha Quiñones, Director of Engineering at Skillshare, one day of training, two days of informational sessions and panel discussions, and even a 25-year celebration event that includes drinks, food, and surprises, this conference is set to be educational and exciting.

To add to the festivities, our own Senior Backend Engineer, Sal Ferrarello, is presenting, not one, but TWO talks at php[world]: “Object Oriented Primer: Interfaces, Traits & Inheritance,” a beginner workshop that takes place at 10:00 a.m. in Fairfax A on Wednesday and “Enforcing Coding Standards with PHP_CodeSniffer,” a beginner session happening on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in Ash Grove B.

“I love WordPress and WordCamps but I also enjoy getting outside the WordPress bubble,” says Sal. He attended the conference last year and had a great experience. This will be his first time speaking at php[world]. “I want to share what I know, as well learn. When creating talks I always try to think of what I wish I had known sooner.”

It’s hard enough to put together one presentation, but two? We had to know what compelled Sal to present two different topics.

“PHP_CodeSniffer is a fantastic tool for helping everyone on a team format their code in the same way. While this seems like a small thing, consistently formated code is easier to read, easier to understand, and looks more professional,” Sal explains the motivation behind his session “Enforcing Coding Standards with PHP_CodeSniffer.”

Clarifying the intent of his workshop, “Object Oriented Primer: Interfaces, Traits & Inheritance,” Sal states, “WordPress core tends to lag behind when it comes to using more modern PHP techniques due to its strong commitment to backwards compatibility. These modern techniques, available with newer versions of PHP, can be used when writing any type of PHP code, including WordPress plugins and themes.”

Sal is looking forward to various presentations and even anxious about having to miss some in order to see others, but so far the top talks on his agenda are: Maura Teal’s “WordPress Under Pressure: Tales of Sites at Scale“, Steve Grunwell’s “Build and Release Confidently with Continuous Integration and Delivery,” and Cal Evans’s keynote “Which Way is the ElePHPant Pointed?
