Will Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine for one more outing? He would if Ryan Reynolds has anything to say about it. Reynolds is doing the media rounds for the Deadpool sequel. Deadpool, which proved that an R-Rated comic book movie could be made on a minimal budget and still make oodles of cash at the box office. While Jackman left it all on the screen with his last film, Logan, which saw an R-rating for the character, Reynolds is still pushing for him to come back to his iconic role that launched his career.
Of course, Jackman’s Wolverine died at the end of “Logan” but we are talking comics so anything is possible. Speaking with EW, Reynolds once again expressed a desire for a team-up with the now retired from “X-Men”:
“He’s alive and well in my timeline. There is a Logan running around out there with a little bushy chest and his little sharpy, sharpy claws, and he is alive and well and ready to go. I would love that… I think convincing Hugh of that would be a near-impossible feat, but there’s no human being I love more than Hugh Jackman in that universe, and equally so as a friend. He’s just the best.”
Logan was a successful and fitting swan song for Jackman’s Wolverine, who has been involved in most of the X-Men franchise films in one way or another. Clearly, Wolverine is 20th Century Fox’s most successful solo superhero franchise. If the two reunited, it would be a reunion for Reynolds and Jackman, who appeared as their respective selves in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was panned by fans and critics.
Reynolds has been seeking out Jackman to reprise the character since the first Deadpool, with his character making multiple jabs at both Jackman and Wolverine. And a week ago, Jackman responded in kind.
Reynolds is reprising his role as the Merc with a Mouth in Deadpool 2 alongside Zazie Beetz as the luck-manipulating mutant Domino and Josh Brolin as Cable, the time-traveling son of the X-Men’s Cyclops. Jack Kesy (The Strain, Baywatch) is playing the film’s central villain, which, while unconfirmed, is rumored to be Irish mutant Black Tom Cassidy. Other additions to the cast include Shioli Kutsuna, Terry Crews as Bedlam, Lewis Tan as Shatterstar, with Bill Skarsgård, and Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople).
The sequel is expected to do just as well if not better than the first. Stars returning from Deadpool include Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Karan Soni as Dopinder, and Stefan Kapicic as the voice of Colossus. Deadpool 2 will be released May 18.
