Apple iOS 13 and iPhone 11 release date to make millions of phones obsolete

September is harvest season for Apple fans because it’s generally the month when a new iPhone is released.

But it’s also a time of darkness for some unfortunate people whose old phones are rendered totally redundant.

On September 10, Apple will unleash a new gadget that we think is going to be called the iPhone 11.

It will also unleash new software called iOS 13 to power iPhones as well as the new iPadOS for its tablets.

Sadly, not every device will be compatible with this new software.

If you own an iPhone 6 or any device older than this, you’re out of luck – it will not run the latest software.

Apple reportedly sold more than 200 million of these devices along with the larger iPhone 6 Plus, which is also about to become obsolete.

These iPhones will be able to run iOS 13

  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE
  • iPod touch (7th generation)

You might think this is stingy of Apple, but actually in this rather bleak era of throwaway tech, a five year support period is actually rather generous.

When iOS 13 is released, your ancient iPhone will still work, but it will no longer receive all the security updates from Apple, making it more vulnerable to hack attacks.

Beta testers have spent the past few months digging into iOS 13 to make sure it’s bug-free ahead of its public release later this year.

But one user claimed that he saw the software automatically remove a ‘bad word’ he’d bashed into his iPhone during a dark, long night of the soul moment.

This is the rather sad message which revealed the ‘censorship of bad words’ (Provider: Reddit/u/_l_e_x_)

The alleged swear censorship happened after a user of the subreddit iOS/beta scrawled an emotional screed into the iOS 13 Notes app using his own handwriting.

The app is capable of recognising words and suggesting a filename for the note.

However, the Reddit user claimed the suggested name was: ‘I’m the most stupid thing to exist, life is …….’

In the blanked-out space, f****** was replaced by full-stops.

Warm-hearted Reddit users were less concerned about the obliterated obscenity and more worried about the writer of the post.

Many other users chipped in with positive messages and asked them to share any fears or worries over a DM.

The iOS beta tester then wrote: ‘I’m talking to someone right now and it shows me again how great the internet actually is as it gives you so much opportunity to talk to amazing people.

‘It’s actually quite funny that this is all happening as I was just feeling down and my Wi-Fi was really slow and I wanted to draw but ProCreate still wasn’t downloaded so I just went into the notes app and started writing and then realized this and posted it.’

He added: ‘When you see a lot of negativity happen on the internet and hate everywhere situations like this really brighten up your days.’

Another tester of the operating system also reported seeing the word f*** being expunged from file names, although he also discovered ‘ass’ was totally fine.

You can protect yourself from swearwords using various iPhone settings. For instance, you can make sure Siri doesn’t read out any ‘explicit language’.

Google turns on a ‘profanity filter’ by default on its Pixel phones and will not transcribe your filthy language or read out naughty words.

We have written to Apple for comment.
