Two-minute tip

This week’s tip is related to the release of macOS Catalina, which requires your software to be 64-bit. If you’re using newer, recently released software, chances are it’s 64-bit. But if you have an app or two that’s old and never been updated, it could be 32-bit. And 32-bit software won’t work on Catalina.

Before you upgrade to Catalina, check to see if you have any apps that are 32-bit and need to be upgraded. You can do this with an app from St. Claire Software called Go64. Go64 scans your Mac, and lists whether it’s 64-bit or not. It also provides web links to the app developer’s website so you can check for upgrades. You can get Go64 at stclairsoft.com.

If you don’t want to use a third-party app, you can check your software in the Mac’s Activity Monitor app, which is found in your Mac’s Utilities folder. We have an article on with the details on how to use Activity Monitor to check if your software is 32- or 64-bit.
