Right now, video content is slowly shifting to favor mobile devices by turning vertical
As of the third quarter of 2018, 52.2% of all website traffic worldwide was generated through mobile phones, up from 50.3% in the previous year. That 2.2% shows that mobile devices are, slowly but surely, taking over the website traffic share.
The majority of websites are already responsive, which means they adjust to the device they’re displayed in. Right now, video content is slowly shifting to favor mobile devices by turning vertical.
The rise of social videos
Social media marketing is arguably the most effective method of raising awareness for any type of business. In 2019, it’s projected that there will be 2.77 billion people with social network accounts. Basically, you can find almost any type of customer or lead on social media.
The largest social media platforms have seen that vertically-oriented content is not going away anytime soon. So, instead of resisting the change, they embraced it.
Instagram, for example, have been pushing more users’ activity towards their ‘Stories’ feature. Stories are short, vertically-oriented videos that disappear within 24 hours (unless they get pinned). They also added the feature to Facebook with an identical name.
Instagram and Facebook are mobile-oriented social media platforms. This means the vertical format of stories makes it more immersive since they play full-screen without having users turn their phone sideways.
In addition to that, Instagram launched IGTV, which in a nutshell is a YouTube for vertical videos. This move shows that Mark Zuckerberg and co are trying to get more content creators to publish their videos on their platform.
YouTube, being the largest video-oriented social media (yes, YouTube is a social media platform now), have been optimizing their video player to dynamically adjust to videos’ native aspect ratio. What that means is you won’t see any black bars around your video despite its native resolution.
The future of video marketing
Don’t get me wrong, horizontal videos are great. Movies, TV shows and the majority of YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia and the like will remain horizontal. However, from a video and mobile marketing perspective, vertical videos have much bigger potential in reaching the intended target audience.
In this infographic, Breadnbeyond shows us why vertical videos are the future of marketing and what we should do in order to achieve optimal results with them.
