From the studio that developed “Shadowgate,” Zojoi’s is back with Argonus and the Gods of Stone. The game is a first-person storytelling puzzle adventure where you play the role of Argonus.
Argonus was a historian, cartographer and most importantly and Argonaut.
The story begins with you waking up on a shore with little information of where you are. You discover your ship was lured into the rocks by the Sirens’ Song and you are the only survivor of the Argonauts.
Aided by Athena you embark on your adventure coming face to face with gods and mythical creatures. Only by solving puzzles set by the Gods can you find your way home.
The story itself is told through a constant narration voiced by Betsy Brantley from Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Princess Bride. With voice dialogue for every action and object in the game, it helps you whilst wonderfully feeding you the storyline.
The Scroll/Map feature is a remarkably well-crafted tool that the developers have made. Not only is it your map of the area but it also serves as another storytelling tool. When you complete area objectives you can watch these beautiful hand-drawn animations that are accompanied by a voice-over from your character.
The game leans on the greek mythology and these short drawings only heighten this with the showing of mythical creatures like Harpies.
Argonus and the Gods of Stone has an open world feel to it, you can explore but some of the areas will be blocked until you can solve the puzzle to unlock that area. Zojoi’s ambitions are big in Argonus and the Gods of Stone with the design and graphics challenging triple-A titles.
Zojoi’s have expertise in creating an instinctive UI and graphical experience for the player and they have achieved that again. The game provides you with markers for points of interest and even though at times I struggled with finding a few items it was more down to the fact I had missed the dialogue. The game gives you subtle hints like having an open hand icon when you can use an item it is just a matter of finding the right item to use.
The game has a beautiful open world feel with some stunning graphics and storytelling. In no way is it like Shadowgate with it being a much more relaxed adventure with the freedom to explore. Argonus and the Gods of Stone feed you with a supply of mythological references that will satisfy any Greek mythology enthusiast. The game can feel laborious at times with the hunt for items having no direction but the games music and relaxed nature made this a great experience for the explorers.
