After several years and dozens of prototypes, Boston Dynamics officially announced the launch of Spot, an agile mobile robot that can be customized for a wide range of applications. The base model provides rough-terrain mobility, 360° obstacle avoidance, various levels of navigation, remote control and autonomy. You can also add specialized sensors, software and other payloads. The company already has early customers testing Spot to monitor construction sites, provide remote inspection at gas / oil / power installations, and in public safety positions. It’s currently in mass production and is shipping to select early adopters.

If you want to outright own a Spot robot, you’ll have to wait a bit longer as Boston Dynamics is only leasing units right now. However, not just anyone can lease one of these robots, as all interested parties have to first go through an intensive screening process.
