You are a founder of a deep tech company in pharma and also the head of the Startup Ecosystem Accelerator. Tell me about it?
Hi, Simon! Thank you for the opportunity to share the story. My journey as an entrepreneur was unplanned but when it started four years ago, I realized that building a startup requires more than just building a company. It takes a whole ecosystem – That is why I joined the Startup Heatmap team. We are all practitioners and we were excited to understand how the European startup ecosystem was evolving. Two years ago, in Madrid, we had this Heureka moment, that everyone is focused on startups, but not on ecosystems. And this is a problem, we are solving now with our program for ecosystem builders.
Building a startup 2.0
Is Startup Ecosystem Accelerator for ecosystem builders?
Exactly! Startups can grow better and faster in a vibrant startup ecosystem. The tools that ecosystem builders need, are different from those that you learn in management courses and they are also different on how startup support organizations have been working for too long.
Most chambers of commerce, university incubators, but also accelerators, corporates and VC funds focus on input-output relations. ‘I teach you how to raise funds, and then you will raise funds’ – this is not how the reality works. Ecosystems have by nature many dimensions and it is a complex task to make the various pieces work together. We don’t have all the answers, but we bring a dedication to the problem that is a new perspective and practical training.
Serghei Glinca, Startup Heatmap
There are many events and courses around entrepreneurship. Why another one?
That’s a great question! And the answer is, it is not another course, but rather a different one. Many events have the purpose of content building, our focus is on building deep relationships and learning from each other. It is so to say a way for the natural growth of community building.
Your target audience ecosystem builders. Who are those people?
Ecosystem builders are those mythical magicians that create an environment, where unicorns are born and grown (laughs). Well, an ecosystem builder is actually everyone who somehow contributes to the development of the startup ecosystem. There is an increasing number of people who have officially the task to actively build an ecosystem for startups and those builders are our target audience.
What makes you as a team different?
Everyone involved in the project is somehow fully and professionally involved in activities in a startup ecosystem. So, everyone in the team is a practitioner and commits a certain amount of time in the Startup Heatmap on a voluntary basis. This way the implicit incentive is so to say community-driven.
What are the unique features of the Startup Ecosystem Accelerator?
The program goes over three weeks and is structured in three parts. The first part is online material to do on your own time. Every week we have a new content module and at the same time a live expert session, where participants can profit from the experience of the mentors and also ask them for advice. Finally, all the participants meet in a two-day offline seminar where we introduce a practical tool – our Startup City Canvas – that helps to navigate the complexity of ecosystem building.

Further courses:
Venture Capital for Ecosystem Builders, December 2019
A course specifically designed for ecosystem builders, who are neither investors, brokers or recipients of investments themselves, but are rather working with a variety of stakeholders to increase the efficacy of the investment process. The course aims to provide a deepened understanding of the investment cycle from the setting up and building of a fund to the execution of investments into startups.

Startup Ecosystem Data Lab, December 2019
Ecosystem builders don’t need to be statistic professors to generate data and build strategies on their insights. This course led by a data pro teaches ecosystem builders to pull information from public sources and execute straight-forward analysis with basic tools like excel or google sheets to inform their decision-making. Together we will set up a small monitoring system, that participants can keep using themselves back in the office.
