Free SCORE workshop set
TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City’s SCORE chapter will hold a free afternoon workshop on Thursday, Sept. 28, from noon to 1 p.m. in the McGuire Community Room at the Traverse Area District Library on Woodmere Avenue.
“Is it working? SEO and analytic results” is the title of the workshop. Attendees will learn the three must-have components of search engine optimization, tips on how to track the analytic results and modifying a marketing plan based on the results.

TC Tourism wins awards
TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Tourism was recognized in several categories at the Michigan Society of Association Executives 16th Annual Diamond Awards event on Sept. 14 in Dearborn.
TC Tourism earned two top honors, the Diamond Award, in the Website category and in the Magazine Publishing ($1 million or greater) category, for Traverse City Magazine.
It won honorable mentions in the Innovative Collaborations category, the Social Media Campaign category and the Website category.
MSAE, based in East Lansing, is a professional organization of more than 1,600 members that works to advance knowledge in the association industry.
Registration open for Chamber expo
TRAVERSE CITY — Area businesses and organizations can reserve a space at the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and Economic Outlook Breakfast on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.
The event draws more than 140 exhibitors and 1,300 attendees.
The Chamber’s annual Economic Outlook Breakfast is from 7:30-9 a.m. in the resort’s Michigan Ballroom. Presenters include Mitchell Stapley, chief investment officer with ClearArc Capital Inc. and Jeff Connolly, president of West Michigan Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan. The Expo is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the resort’s Governor’s Hall. Admission is free and the event is open to the public. Booths are $500 for Chamber members and $900 for non-members. Runway closures at Pellston Airport
PELLSTON — Emmet County’s Pellston Regional Airport will be rehabilitating its primary runway, which will lead to closures through the expected completion of Friday, Oct. 27.
The main runway, 14/32, closed on Sept. 18 when all traffic will shift over to the secondary runway, 5/23. Both runways will be temporarily closed from Oct. 6-10, when Pellston Regional will be closed to all aircraft activity. The secondary runway is set to reopen after Oct. 10.
The estimated schedule is subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen delays.
Homebuyer education workshop
TRAVERSE CITY — The Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency will hold a two-day Homebuyer Education workshop on Monday, Oct. 2 and Wednesday, Oct. 4. Classes begin at 5:30 p.m. each night at the NMCAA’s Traverse City office at 3963 Three Mile Rd.

McLain wins Innovation Award
TRAVERSE CITY — McClain Cycle & Fitness in Traverse City and Cadillac won one of 10 Interbike Innovation awards for 2017.
According to a news release, the Interbike Innovation Awards are for independent bicycle retailers “that have implemented innovative ideas and strategies to their businesses with positive results” over the past year.
Winners attended the 2017 Interbike International Expo in Las Vegas Sept. 20-22, participated in a seminar presenting their ideas and will be profiled in Bicycle Retailer Industry News. Winners will also receive an IB Award for display in their stores.
Hagerty accepting nonprofit apps
TRAVERSE CITY — Hagerty is accepting applications from area organizations to be considered for its 2018 Annual Nonprofit Partner.
In addition to a financial investment of $25,000, Hagerty will work with the selected nonprofit to “plan a mutually determined year-long service program.”
Qualified organizations must be a registered 501(c)(3) will a strong presence and an office in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties. Request for Proposal applications will be accepted by email through 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13. Applications will be reviewed and a site visit held during the first week of November. The winner will be announced in December.

Wills and Trusts workshop Oct. 10
TRAVERSE CITY — A Wills and Trusts workshop will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the TBA Credit Union branch at 630 E. Front St. Two one-hour sessions are available beginning at 3 or 6 p.m.

Doctor to speak on cancer surgery
GAYLORD — Otsego Memorial Hospital general surgeon Dr. Wendy Frye will discuss the evolution of the surgical approach to breast cancer on Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 5-6 p.m. in the Professional Medical Building Conference Room at OMH, located at 829 North Center Avenue in Gaylord.
Frye will discuss less aggressive lymph node surgery, pain management techniques for mastectomy post-operative pain and information on a new device available for radiation therapy at OMH.

Chateau Chantal harvest festival set
TRAVERSE CITY — Chateau Chantal hosts its 18th annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 7, from noon to 4 p.m.
All activities take place at Chateau Chantal, 12 miles north of Traverse City on Old Mission Peninsula. The free festival is open to the public and includes a variety of family activities.
Wine tasting is available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at several wine tasting areas.
Defense industry outreach event set
ACME — An industry event to simplify and streamline the process of doing business with the Department of Defense will be held on Thursday, Oct. 12.
The U.S. Army’s Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center External Business Office Industry Outreach Event will unite industry, government and academic partners. Representatives from TARDEC, the event will also include representatives from the U.S. Army’s Tank and Automotive Command, the Defense Logistics Agency and the Michigan Defense Center.
The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration and networking will begin at 7:30 a.m. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. There is no charge to attend but advance registration is required at www.nwm.org/tardec.
Summit planned for Oct. 20
TRAVERSE CITY — The Freshwater Roundtable presents the 10th annual Freshwater Summit on Friday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hagerty Center at Northwestern Michigan College.
Presentations include meteotsunamis in the Great Lakes, the Boardman River FishPass project, swimmer’s itch and a lightning session featuring eight-minute talks on local research and restoration projects, including an update on green infrastructure installations on Kids Creek.

Lab student scholarships ready
TRAVERSE CITY — Applications are available for the American Proficiency Institute Scholarship Program, which will award five $2,000 scholarships to medical laboratory science students in 2017.
Scholarship applications are available at www.api-pt.com. Senior and junior level medical lab science students are encouraged to apply.
Applicants should complete the application and submit it to their program director for a signature and a statement of support. Program directors must submit the completed application to API by Nov. 10. Winners will be announced on Dec. 8.
mPerks available through delivery
GRAND RAPIDS — Meijer and home delivery partner Shipt are now offering mPerks for its store-to-door service.
Meijer home-delivery customers can sign up for the mPerks rewards program or link an existing account to their Shipt account and earn rewards on qualifying purchases. The mPerks can then be redeemed during in-store visits at any Meijer store.
Meijer customers can sign up for Shipt memberships for $99 per year. Delivery is free for orders over $35 and $7 for orders under that amount.
Cherryland awards $11,500
TRAVERSE CITY — Cherryland Cares awarded $11,500 to five area nonprofit organizations.
Receiving grants were Acme Christian Thrift Store, Boots for Kids, Habitat for Humanity Benzie County, Leelanau County Cancer Foundation and the National Alliance for Mental Illness Grand Traverse.
The Cherryland Cares board is made up of five volunteer Cherryland Electric Cooperative members, who decide which nonprofits will receive donations from the Cherryland Cares Round Up program. The money comes from participating members who choose to round up their bills to the nearest dollar.

New Horizons accredited
RAPID CITY — New Horizons Clubhouse in Rapid City has achieved three-year accreditation status from Clubhouse International.
New Horizons is the second Clubhouse operated under the North Country Community Health to achieve accreditation. There are more than 323 Clubhouses worldwide, 198 of which are accredited. There are 16 accredited Clubhouses in Michigan.
