Chick-Fil-A firing another employee for publicly voicing support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) social movements is satirical news. There is no truth to a report that the restaurant chain known for their chicken sandwiches and Christian values had terminated an employee because they voiced a support for the LGBT movement.

Where did this satirical news originate? The Babylon Bee published the satirical news article on June 8, 2018, reporting that the popular chicken chain was in hot water for firing an employee for publicly voicing his approval of the LGBT movement. You can read the satire below.

HUNTSVILLE, AL—Bigoted, homophobic restaurant chain Chick-fil-A is at it again: the Christian-owned fast-food joint just fired yet another employee for publicly voicing his approval of the LGBT movement.

Brad Russell, a cashier at a Huntsville location, tweeted his support for Pride month and was fired several hours later. This is the 427th instance of Chick-fil-A terminating an employee for disagreeing with the private beliefs of the company’s owners in the past year alone.

“Russell needs to take a big dose of ‘shut the #$%^ up’ and hide out for awhile,” Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy had said in an interview with Buzzfeed after Russell’s post went viral, with thousands of outraged Christians demanding his firing. “We do so much good work with such pure hearts — to have some LGBT zealot in his off-time do something this stupid, we’re all upset. The whole company is upset. This changes his standing with us. What that looks like, I don’t know. It’s so unfortunate.”

However, the above story is false. What is the problem with the story to make it false? There is no legitimate news coverage of such a story about Chick-Fil-A. A simple search of The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette comes up with no results for this alleged story about “Brad Russell.” There is no record that Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy made the quote to Buzzfeed cited in the fake story.

Rather, The Babylon Bee describes itself as “your trusted source for Christian news satire.” The Babylon Bee is a satirical evangelical Christian website. The site is famous for over-the-top fake stories focusing on well known pastors, celebrities, and politicians.

Here are some examples of people sharing the satirical news on social media.

Snopes has previously reported on Chick-Fil-A’s alleged ties to supporting an anti-gay marriage campiang. Cathy’s July 2012 interview with the Baptist Press generated even more controversy over the issue, with critics maintaining he had virtually acknowledged the company supports an anti-gay marriage agenda:

Chick-fil-A is “very much supportive of the family,” according to Dan Cathy, president of the popular fast food chain. That is, “the biblical definition of the family unit,” he said.

And that doesn’t include Adam and Steve, suggests Cathy, whose father S. Truett Cathy founded the Atlanta-based company.

In a new interview with Baptist Press, Cathy puts on the record what critics say his company’s actions have indicated for years. “Well, guilty as charged,” he said in the interview when asked about Chick-fil-A’s backing of families led by a man and a woman.
