Cork Discovers and European Researchers’ Night takes place, 27th September, Cork City

University College Cork and with pop up events across Cork City on Friday, 27th September.

How many years has it been going?

This is the second year of Cork Discovers however the wider event ‘European Researchers’ Night’ began in 2005.

What was the inspiration to start it?

The European Researchers’ Night aims to bring researchers closer to the general public and to increase awareness of research and innovation activities, with a view to supporting the public recognition of researchers, creating an understanding of the impact of researchers’ work on citizen’s daily life, and encouraging young people to embark on scientific careers.

What exciting things can people look forward to?

·         Over 30 Experiments and Activities including an interactive spectrogram to see sound in full colour, a 3D printer making cool shapes with soft cheeses and a virtual reality demo with headsets.

·         Hands-on workshops for kids of all ages where they can get up close to equipment and technology and discover how to solve problems themselves. ‘Chemistry Has All the Solutions’ Workshop will invite students to perform forensic tests on a crime scene and participate in a mini-magic show.

·          Events for the grown-ups including Cork Talks – a speaker series attracting curious minds to panel discussion on climate, cryptocurrency and crime, a ‘stand-up researcher’ comedy night with Chris Kent

·         Live Performances including acrobatics from Ireland’s Got Talent finalists; Rebel Acro, rap by young musicians from Knocknaheeny’s Kabin Studio, hip hop from Cork Migrant Centre Dance Group and musical performances from Centre Stage School.

What opportunities are on offer for those attending?

To meet researchers and learn about the most cutting edge advances they are working on and breakthroughs that they are making.

Who will be speaking?

Over 100 researchers will be taking part. In the Cork Talks Speaker Series for example there will be talks about the extinction of birds by Tom Reed, the future of dairy-free diets by Laurence Shalloo and a beginner’s guide to beekeeping by Archie Laffin. Dirk Pesch and Kenneth Brown will introduce the ‘Smart City’ and discuss how data analytics can help us to consolidate car and bus journeys and encourage new ways of transport.

They will be joined by Eleanor Doyle who will be explaining cryptocurrencies and Joseph Whelan who will speak about Universal Basic Income.  There will also be short talks by Orla Lynch on the psychology of terrorism, Robert Bolton on why we commit violent crime and local author Kevin Doyle will speak about the prevailing popularity of Crime Fiction.

What tips would you give to people attending to get the most out of it?

There will be researchers there from almost every discipline so bring your curiosity and an open mind. If you want to visit different venues in the City then wrap up warm and bring an umbrella.
