Dee Dadlani, owner explains how the business has changed over the years and how Diamond Designs has stayed ahead of the curve through technology and social media exposure.
The Dadlani family has been selling and servicing jewelry for the Orange & Milford community since the late 1970’s.
Dee’s parents, Bob and Sandy Dadlani arrived in the United States from India in 1970. They had a company named Silver Charm at the Post mall where they sold silver and gold jewelry. Evolving from Silver Charm into Sapphire Jewelers, their focus was more on gold, colored stones, watches and diamonds. The Dadlanis moved to Orange in 1983 because of the school system and its proximity to their work.
As a child, Dee helped out in the store and soon familiarized himself with all the facets of the business. It wasn’t until he graduated from UCONN with a degree in Economics that he truly focused on returning to Sapphire Jewelers full time to manage the store.
After four years, Dee’s father, who was 61 at the time, decided to retire. The jewelry business was Dee’s passion but he was not ready to open up his own store. Ranking towards the top of his class as a gemologist, he was quickly recruited by Paramount Gems, a jewelry manufacturer, to work as a sales executive out of their New York office. He represented their products to independent jewelry retailers across the country. He later was promoted to working with regional chains of 5-40 stores and eventually promoted to key account sales, focusing on the two largest jewelry accounts in the country.
It was a conversation with his father that inspired him to channel his efforts to build his own business.
In June of 2002, Diamond Designs opening its doors in Orange, in the same community that warmly welcomed his family over 30 years ago.
Since then, Diamond Designs has become an authorized dealer for some of the most prestigious brands in the industry including Simon G, Artcarved, Ritani, and Swarovski as well as manufacturing its own signature designs
As with any successful business, embracing social media has instrumental to growth and success in recent years. Diamond Designs focuses on a strong social media presence, providing a story about many of the brands it carries.
“Clients today may start with an on-line search, and use the experience for research on an item. It’s after that point where a client will come in to see the true quality of the piece. We make sure to track our inventory so our best selling items are available at all times. Equally, we focus on what our clients are looking for instead of what happens to be selling at any given time,” said Dee. “Conducting business has changed a little from the early years but we are happy to say it’s our client relationships and the trust they place in us that have enabled us to exceed our goals.”
