If you were a fan of The Defenders on Netflix, then you will be disappointed that a second season of the Marvel superhero series is unlikely. Krysten Ritter spoke about the little chance that the mini-series “Defenders” crossover would see another season. The first season was expected to be a huge success featuring all four superheroes; however, the first season did not live up to expectations.

When the first season of “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones” aired, both shows received high praise from critics and fans. However, the second season of “Daredevil” was not as well received. “Luke Cage” started off strong but the back end episodes failed to win over fans. Finally, “Iron Fist” was poorly received. “The Defenders” then could not bring back success for the Marvel/Netflix deal.

Ritter told Vulture that there is zero plans for a “Defenders” follow-up:

“Y’know, I had a great time doing ‘The Defenders’ and honestly, it was such a good experience that I would even do it again. I don’t think we are doing it again. It was never intentioned to do it again, but, you know, if I was given another opportunity, I would. My heart is in ‘Jessica Jones,’ but I did have a great time doing ‘The Defenders’ with the guys. We had a good time. It is what it is.”

The comments come as “Jessica Jones” launches within the next day on the streaming service, kicking off a wave of new seasons of all four solo heroes in the line-up with “Luke Cage” returning in June, “Daredevil” later this year and “Iron Fist” early next year.

While it is a shame that fans might not see another season of “The Defenders,” Comicbook.com noted that fans may still see characters interact. The Marvel Netflix shows have been known to include various characters in other shows from time to time. Luke Cage and Misty Knight are set to appear in the second season of Iron Fist, while Claire Temple will be featured in Luke Cage’s new season.

Here are some reactions on social media to the lack of a second season to “The Defenders.”

Marvel’s The Defenders follows Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones), a quartet of singular heroes with one common goal – to save New York City. The series also stars Academy Award-nominated actress Sigourney Weaver as the antagonist, simply named Alexandra, and features the return of Elodie Yung as Elektra, Scott Glenn as Stick, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth, Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker, Eka Darville as Malcolm Ducasse, with Simone Missick as Misty Knight and Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing.

What do you think about the small chance of a second season of The Defenders on Netflix? Who would you like to see as the villain for a possible second season? Let us know in the comments section.
