Digital map helps visitors uncover history at European Heritage Open Day

Esri Ireland, the market leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), today announces that its software has been used by the Department for Communities to create a digital story map  which charts over 300 events for the upcoming European Heritage Open Days 2019 in Northern Ireland.

Taking place this weekend, 14th-15th September, European Heritage Open Days provide free access to events and spaces, many of which are not always open to the public throughout the year. The interactive map, which was produced using Esri’s digital mapping software, enables visitors to view details of event that are happening throughout Northern Ireland for the weekend.

The initiative, which was originally launched in 1985 now sees over 70,000 events being organised across Europe every year. This year’s events in Northern Ireland will reflect the theme of Arts and Entertainment which presents an opportunity to explore the heritage of arts and entertainment and learn about their history and architecture.

Rachel Steenson, Market Engagement Manager, NI, Esri Ireland said: “The European Heritage Open Days are a fantastic initiative for both locals and tourists in Northern Ireland every year. It’s great to see parks, castles and heritage centres opening their doors for one weekend to really give visitors a flavour of the rich culture and history that Northern Ireland has to offer. The weekend has something for everyone, from walking tours to storytelling sessions. This map will allow those attending the weekend to chart their weekend and to make the most out of what’s going on.”

Iain Greenway, Director of Historic Environment in the Department for Communities, said: “Over the years we have been organising European Heritage Open Days across Northern Ireland and we continue to look for new ways in which we can highlight and share these events to the thousands of people who make visits over this weekend. The use of a map-based tool has enabled easy access to information and allows people to plan their days. This mapping tool has been an important part of the Department’s continued promotion of this annual event and further underpins our work to support people, build communities and shape places.”
