Like many independent DJ/ Producers, you are kind of on your own when it comes to marketing yourself. You don’t have the luxury of a team to help support you, so you need to become your own social media manager, at least until you hit the big time.
Here are some tips to help you create a more organized and effective social media attack.
1. Brand Consistency is key. If possible try to get your artist name the same on all platforms so people can easily find it, this is also good for Search Engine Optimization or SEO. For example if you get the FB handle /djsocialmedia you are going to want that for @tags for Twitter, Instagram, and Soundcloud. It’s not always easy, sometimes you will need to make adjustments to your DJ name or little tweaks, like DJSocialMediaMusic or “official.”
2. Keep your content flowing regularly and make sure to interact with other artists, fans, and publications. It’s like being at an actual convention, make sure you talk to people and network, don’t just stand around and expect people to come to you because they probably won’t.
Also, make sure to stay consistent with the content that you are sharing/post/tweeting you need to have a regular presence to get noticed as well. Once a week will not cut it, this is a daily exercise, and it will take some patience to figure out your style. It’s always good to have a mix of content on your page and not always be promoting yourself because that’s just greedy. Being social is all about sharing and collaborating, ask other artists their opinion, set-up remix exchanges with people, etc.
