E-commerce cashes in on Diwali

Diwali, widely known as the festival of lights, is one of the most celebrated occasions in India – one that offers several opportunities for businesses to cash in on the festivities.

Mintel research shows that one in five Indians with internet access shops online for clothes, footwear and accessories. Furthermore, a third of consumers say they use premium food, beauty and lifestyle products around special occasions like festivals.

In that sense, this year saw e-commerce retailers in India leveraging the euphoria of festivities by offering discounts and freebies. Here, we look at how Snapdeal, Amazon and Flipkart are leveraging this occasion to capture the spirit of the celebration.

Snapdeal’s Snap Diwali Sale 2019

Snapdeal launched their Snap Diwali sale campaign early this month and are offering exclusive deals on a wide range of bestsellers including products for home, fashion, and fitness. Furthermore, the website has created a Diwali gifting e-store to ensure convenience and choice to its patrons. The e-store is said to have all products that a consumer will need for Diwali celebrations which includes an assortment of traditional and modern gift items like electronics and home-related products.

Flipkart’s Big Diwali Sale 2019

Flipkart’s five-day ‘Big Diwali Sale’ offered discounts and deals on mobile phones, TVs, appliances, electronics, accessories, fashion, furniture and a lot more.

Mintel research reveals that one in seven Indians purchase electronics online. In fact, according to a report in Livemint, smartphone makers in India are raking in millions on the back of festive sales. Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi sold over 38 lakh smartphones, with the Redmi Note 7 becoming the best-selling smartphone series on Flipkart.

Just days after Amazon’s Great Indian Festival sale, which concluded on 4 October, Amazon has announced another festive sale, the ‘Great Indian Festival Celebration Special Sale’, on its platform. The five-day sale offers exciting discounts and lucrative offers on the purchase of electronic devices, fashion, home and other items. Other offers include no-cost EMIs when using debit cards to pay for purchases and discounts when using specific credit cards.
