Each month, Facebook releases it’s ‘Hot Topics’ and ‘Topics to Watch’ reports, which provide insight into the key conversations gaining momentum across The Social Network. This year, for the first time, Facebook has published an annual trends report, utilizing the same methodology as their monthly updates, and shining a light on the key subjects which have seen significant increases in mention volume over the past 12 months.
The idea behind the report is that by looking at the topics seeing a significant increase in volume, we can better predict future trends – if ‘augmented reality’ is seeing more mentions, its safe to assume that will continue to increase in 2018. Using this, marketers can better focus their campaigns and content on rising topics, moving in line with audience trends.
The full report includes Facebook’s findings across seven categories – Beauty & Fashion, Commerce, Culture, Entertainment, Food & Drink, Mind & Body, and Technology – with detailed insights for each.
As you can see, the charts (this one from the ‘Fashion’ category) show the topics gaining momentum, which user groups are discussing them (by age), and gender splits. This can be key information for those looking for insights into the trends among their target audience.
Some of the trends you’re no doubt already aware of – like ‘Stranger Things’ gaining momentum.
But even then, it’s interesting to see just how many more mentions each topic is seeing – and again, who, among Facebook users, is more likely to discuss it.
There’s also information on rising ‘days’:
Cryptocurrency:
And technology:
There’s a heap more insights in the full report, which is well worth a look for those trying to stay on top of the latest trends and shifts, and considering how they might use them in their marketing approach.
