Alderman George Cardenas (12th Ward) and State Representative Theresa Mah (D-2nd) presented their annual Back to School Health Fair at McKinley Park recently. More than 1,000 people attended and received gifts and services including free school backpacks (with supplies), immunizations, physicals, and haircuts. 

Cardenas joined a recent block party on 39th Place and California Avenue and spoke with residents about City services, his alley safety program, and school funding. He also joined the Sam Colonna Boxing students in sparring.

EVENT HELPS CHILDREN 

The Chicago Lighthouse, the Service Club of Chicago, and the Walnut Room at Macy’s came together September 12 during Flair 2017 to support children’s programs at the Lighthouse. Held at the Walnut Room this year, the annual philanthropic fashion luncheon raised more than $64,000. Continuing a longstanding Lighthouse tradition of honoring women who change lives, the event lauded noted philanthropist Cheri Lawrence for her contributions to the agency and many other local charitable organizations.

NEW THEATRE

Chicago Shakespeare Theatre has opened its third theater, the Yard at Chicago Shakespeare, at Navy Pier. The Yard is located at the site of the former Skyline Stage and has nine audience seating towers that the group can arrange in many configurations to seat from 150 to 850 viewers. Meeting online buyers or sellers in person is now a little safer for both University of Illinois at Chicago personnel and the general public thanks to the University of Illinois at Chicago Police. The department opened its district station front lobby to the public as a Safe Exchange Zone, where people can carry out legal swaps, sales, or purchases on campus as well as make child custody exchanges. NOWHERE PEOPLE

Few can imagine what it is like to be stateless. A new photo exhibit, Nowhere People, running now through Saturday, Dec. 2, at Roosevelt University’s Gage Gallery, 18 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, tells the story. The exhibition by photographer Greg Constantine features 39 black-and-white photographs of children who have no citizenship and, therefore, no place to call their true home. Rush University Medical Center ranked fourth among 107 leading academic medical centers in the United States, up from fifth last year, in a national study conducted by the health care services company Vizient. Rush has ranked among the top five in the annual Quality and Accountability Study five consecutive times and nine times since the University HealthSystem Consortium, now part of Vizient, began the study in 2005. The ranking earns Rush a Birnbaum Award, recognizing it for demonstrating superior performance as measured by the study.
