Geek Pick: DJI Mavic Pro Platinum Is a Premium Drone

DJI is of course one of the biggest names in consumer drones. Whether it’s helping put out the fires at Notre Dame or giving kids horrifying smart tank toys to play with, they’re the #brand to beat when it comes to flying robots. With a name like the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum, it’s no surprise this latest model will easily cost you over a thousand dollars after tariffs. Fortunately, it’s so pricey because it’s so premium.

These days drones are just an expected part of a photographer or videographer’s toolkit. It’s such an easy way to get sick aerial shots out in the field. And the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum features tons of improvements to make capturing those shots even more convenient.

For starters, the drone itself is more compact. The folding design makes it small enough to fit inside a bag full of other camera equipment instead of requiring its own dedicated bulky backpack. The more efficient design also improves the battery life, reaching nearly 30 minutes of flight time on a single charge.

As for image and video quality? Here are just the raw numbers. The DJI Mavic Pro Platinum captures 12MP photos and 4K video. You’ll have to bump down the resolution but you can also get framerates up to 180FPS for slow-motion.

The drone comes with its own video game-esque controller but you’ll need a smartphone to access its full features like even just seeing what the camera sees. You don’t want to rely on just the built-in obstacle avoidance when steering. You should also make sure to regularly connect to the internet to receive frequent firmware updates like unlocking authorizations for new flight zones.
