Google Pixel 4 will be unveiled next week – here are the key features we expect

After months of anticipation, Google will finally unveil its latest Pixel smartphone next week.

The tech giant is expected to reveal a device called Pixel 4 during its event on Tuesday 15 October at 15:00 BST, alongside a host of other devices.

While Google has only revealed a few details about the smartphone, as always rumours have been flying left, right and centre about the device.

From a square rear camera design to hand gesture control, here are all the key features we expect to see in the Google Pixel 4.

Release date

Google has confirmed that it will reveal the new smartphone on Tuesday 15 October, at an event starting at 15:00 BST.

While a release date remains unclear, it’s likely the smartphone will then go on sale in early November.

Price

Google hasn’t given us any hint about the price for the Pixel 4, but we can take a guess based on last year’s pricing.

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL started at £739 and £869 respectively, so it’s likely that this year’s devices will have similar price tags.

Colours

One key clue that Google has given us is on a colour we can expect to see for the Pixel 4.

Google’s Pixel 4 billboard

The tech giant launched a billboard in Times Square showing an orange smartphone, rumoured to be called ‘Oh So Orange.’

Thankfully for those who prefer a more subtle design, the Pixel 4 is rumoured to also come in white and black.

Design

Google has also helpfully shown us a picture of the back of the Pixel 4, revealing a square camera design in the top left corner of the smartphone, alongside its simple ‘G’ logo.

The image also reveals a lack of rear fingerprint scanner – a feature that’s been prominent on all previous Pixel smartphone to date.

This suggests that the fingerprint scanner may have been moved to beneath the front glass, or may have been ditched entirely.

While Google is yet to show us the front of the device, rumours suggest that the smartphone will have a  full bezel at the top, rather than a notch or hole-punch, as most rivals have opted for.

Display

Rumours suggest that the Pixel 4 will have a 5.7-inch screen, while the Pixel 4 XL will have a 6.3-inch screen.

If true, that would mean the Pixel 4 is slightly larger than its predecessor, while the 4 XL is the same size as the 3 XL.

Cameras

As mentioned above, Google has pretty much confirmed the camera on the back of the device as a dual-lens system.

It’s likely that these lenses will be a main 12MP lens, as well as a 16MP telephoto lens.

Meanwhile, the front of the device is likely to have a single 12MP lens built into the top bezel.

The Pixel 4 is also rumoured to have a number of impressive camera features – most notably an astrophotography mode that lets you snap the stars!

Battery

Slightly disappointingly, the Pixel 4 is rumoured to have a 2,800mAh battery, while the Pixel XL is expected to have a 3,700mAh.

In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S10 has a much more impressive 3,400mAh battery, while the S10+ has a whopping 4,100mAh battery.

Key features

One of the most highly anticipated features is a hand gesture control called Motion Sense.

The feature uses a range of sensors alongside the front-facing camera to track hand gestures, allowing you to control the smartphone without even touching it.

Google Assistant is also expected to get an upgrade with a new feature called ‘Continued Conversations’, which lets you ask it follow-up questions without having to repeat ‘Ok Google.’
