Heinz Creating New Chocolate Mayonnaise Is April Fools’ Day Hoax

Does the thought of eating chocolate mayonnaise make your mouth water or turn your stomach? Well, if Heinz UK’s latest condiment sounds repulsive, don’t worry—the chocolate mayo is nothing more than an April Fools’ Day hoax.

According to Snopes, the food-themed prank was shared on the official Heinz UK Facebook page on April Fools’ Day. The post reads, “BIG NEWS! Heinz Chefs have been seriously busy recently, creating a delicious new recipe, Heinz [Seriously] Good CHOCOLATE Mayonnaise!” The accompanying video claimed Heinz chefs had created the “top-secret recipe” for Easter using a mixture of Belgian dark chocolate and the creamy white condiment. The chocolate mayonnaise, however, is not real.

While the chocolate mayo was only meant as an April Fools’ Day joke, the fake condiment still attracted lots of attention on social media. The video was viewed more than 350,000 times on Facebook and garnered hundreds of comments from people who found the prank funny and those who were actually on board with the idea. “I was just thinking omg what on earth would you use it for and then I realised the date! So I half fell for it,” one user wrote. “Was hoping this was real!” commented another person. Meanwhile, others wondered why chocolate mayo doesn’t actually exist. “I am well aware that it’s April fools day,” one person noted. “But I would eat this from the jar with a spoon if it was real.”

Heinz UK’s chocolate mayo may not be real, but there are plenty of other crazy mayo flavors out there. Several brands sell mayonnaise with lime juice, while another offers everything bagel-flavored mayo. Currently, Heinz UK only sells [Seriously] Good Mayo, as well as a light option, and a number of unique condiment sauces. Additionally, the combination of chocolate and mayo is used in a variety of desserts so perhaps the idea isn’t so far-fetched after all.
