If you peak behind the curtain at Google HQ, you’ll likely find a big Wizard of Oz fan.
And unlike the sham of a wizard in the beloved tale, this Google wiz does have the power to take you to Oz and back again.
All thanks to a little Easter Egg to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz…
How to use the Wizard of Oz Google Easter Egg
The ruby slippers is one of the Google tricks that keep us entertained as we surf the web for more memes and online shopping.
To use it, simply search for ‘Wizard of Oz’.
Instead of the same old results, this’ll reveal Dorothy’s ruby slippers — magically blessed with red sparkly animation — in the top-right corner of the Knowledge Panel.
Click on the shoes and off we go – we’re off to see the wizard, and the magical Land of Oz.
After clicking, the unmistakable voice of Judy will start to play.
As you hear ‘there’s no place like home’ – along with other sounds from the film’s closing scenes – your Google results page will start to spin around.
Lasting a few seconds, you’ll find yourself looking to book a Specsavers appointment after everything goes black and white, mimicking the beginning and ending of the film.
This page is fully usable – despite its antiquated look – and any new search takes you back to the regular look.
Where the ruby slippers were to begin with, you’ll now see a tornado.
Click on that and you’ll be sent back to the land of colour – with a cry of ‘Auntie Em!’
Have there been other Google Easter eggs like this?
Unlike the Scarecrow, those people at Google are all brains and there’s been many a fun trick and treat for users before.
Recently, to celebrate the release of Avengers: Endgame, there was a ‘Thanos snap’ Easter egg.
Clicking on Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet would wipe out half of your results – mirroring his actions in the movie.
