I’m Sam, 29 and have been in the industry for just over 3 years.

I work on a number of projects with clients in a range of sectors, overseeing link-building and having a hand in all things content – as well as assisting with the development of the team on a day-to-day basis.

What is your background in Marketing, and how did you come to be in the position you are in now?

This is my first industry role following a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing. I also carried out a number of internships and spent a few months freelancing before I started a full-time role.

Which technical skills do you believe are most important in your role?

Research skills and an analytical eye. Whether it’s client goals or team development, there are daily challenges within our industry and being able to stand back, assess the situation and then find a solution is key.

Which soft skills prove most useful in your role?

I think communication should never be underestimated when dealing with your team and clients. Transparency allows everyone to be fully aware of what both parties expect of each other – so whether this is your client or a team member, you can ensure you’re all working towards the same goals.

Which markets does your organization operate in?

Interior design, travel, fashion and many more.

What can be one of the biggest challenges Marketers face in the industry you operate in?

Juggling several responsibilities on any given day and learning how to prioritise. Most days, everything is a priority, so it’s absolutely crucial that you’re able to constantly switch between tasks without compromising the value of the work you’re delivering.

How do you and your team overcome the aforementioned industry challenges?

Constantly refreshing our approaches – assessing what works and coming up with new and innovative ideas month-on-month. We rely on the entire team to be innovative and proactive, with new ideas always being welcomed.

Describe what a typical day at work looks like for you?

Calls/emails with clients, team meetings, staff development meetings, creating link building strategies, overseeing a number of projects and occasionally writing content.

In your opinion, what are the most valuable skills a marketer in your role can have?

The ability to switch between tasks in an efficient manner. You often need to have your eye on several things at once, with targets, development and clients all being high priorities.

What is unique about the organization you work for?

The team. We’re a mix of hardworking professionals but there’s never a dull day in the office. From quizzes to bake-offs, we make the time to socialise as a team.

What is the best advice you’ve received to date?

You have to seek out opportunities for yourself. If you really want to be the best at what you do, don’t wait for chances to land in your lap.
