macOS Catalina release – Your MacBook may get this blockbuster upgrade today

6.30PM UPDATE: Despite rumours suggesting macOS Catalina would arrive today it seems that fans may have to wait a little longer.

Apple always pushed its updates out at 6pm BST but there’s no sign of this blockbuster MacBook upgrade tonight.

It’s also highly unlikely that this update will be released over the weekend so it seems we’ll have to keep watch next week for more details.

Express.co.uk will be checking for this update and will bring you the latest news as soon as it’s released.

ORIGINAL STORY: macOS Catalina was announced back in June at Apple’s WWDC Developers Conference in San Jose, California.

This major upgrade brings a swathe of new features to your MacBook and iMac including an improved Photos app, Screen Time alerts and something called Sidecar which now allows you to use an iPad as a second screen.

There’s also updates to the general security of these computers and this update will allow your Mac to become more compatible with apps designed for Apple’s iOS mobile platform.

Some very nice updates are arriving in macOS Catalina but there’s still some confusion about when it will be released.

Apple is only confirming that this upgrade will be available in October with no official launch date yet set.

However, there’s been some speculation that today (Friday, October 4) is the date when users will finally be able to access this upgrade.

So why has this date become the focus of attention you may ask?

Some eagled-eyes Apple fans had spotted a post on the firm’s website that revealed Apple Arcade – its new monthly subscription service centred around games – would arrive for Mac users today.

Being able to access Apple Arcade was thought to be part of Catalina and that’s got many hoping for an imminent launch.

Although this is possibly the most accurate information so far, we wouldn’t get too excited just yet.

Apple continues to stay tight-lipped about a release and launching software on a Friday would go against everything the firm has done in the past.

OS and macOS upgrades are usually made available on a Monday or Tuesday so we’ll have to wait and see if this year breaks from tradition.

If an upgrade does appear then expect things to be released at around 6pm this evening – we’ll update this article if we hear more news.

The news of a macOS Catalina release comes as more rumours have surfaced about a possible October event from Apple.

The US technology firm is renowned for unveiling new MacBooks and iPads during this month and speculation is rife that some big updates are inbound.

Some are expecting a new 16-inch MacBook to be announced and the brilliant iPad Pro to get a reboot with it now including a triple rear camera.

In past years the Apple October event has taken place at the end of the month so it’s unlikely anything will be made official for a few weeks.
