Showtime is doing everything in its power to make it as difficult as possible for consumers to find a free Mayweather-McGregor live stream online. Showtime has already successfully been granted a preliminary injunction against multiple websites billing free Mayweather-McGregor live streams.
“Plaintiff alleges that defendants have engaged in such keyword stuffing as a form of search engine optimization in an effort to attract as much web traffic as possible in the form of Internet users searching for a way to access a live stream of the fight,” the company’s attorney wrote in the filing.
U.S. district judge Andre Birotte Jr. ruled in Showtime’s favor, forbidding 44 different websites from advertising Mayweather vs. McGregor live streams. It’s a big win for Showtime in the lead up to the Aug. 26 fight featuring the undefeated Floyd Mayweather against UFC star Conor McGregor.
It’s not hard to see why Showtime is so aggressive fighting the free live streams. Given how highly anticipated the fight is, Showtime is expected to make a hefty revenue off Mayweather-McGregor pay-per-view buys at $99 a pop. Targeting off-brand websites might seem unconventional but it’d be worth millions to Showtime to eradicate all of the illegal Mayweather-McGregor live stream options online.
Showtime took a similar strategy in the lead up to the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight in 2015. That fight was extremely lucrative for both the fighters and Showtime and HBO which put on the fight.
