Melania Trump’s parents emigrated to the United States through family reunification visas is an unproven claim. While President Donald Trump has argued against the use of “chain migration” with regards to the country’s immigration issue, social media users have shared a post on Twitter claiming that the First Lady’s parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, are a perfect example of the hypocrisy of the Trump admiration with its stance on immigration.
Trump has called the practice of “chain migration” as a threat to national security despite. Melania Trump got her green card in 2001 and became a citizen five years later. Now, social media users are questioning whether her parents are an example of “chain migration.” Chain migration is a term used by demographers since the 1960s to refer to the social process by which migrants from a particular town follow others from that town to a particular destination city or neighborhood.

Snopes reported that the meme as unproven as the White House has refused to comment on the matter and immigration status is not a matter of public record. The Knavses do live in the United States. The Knavses lived with their daughter and grandson Barron in the Trump Tower in New York City but have not followed them in their move to Washington, D.C. The Knavses will not be moving into the White House but have already spend most weekends at Mar-a-Lago, according to Fortune.
In the past, Melania Trump addressed the allegation that she married the billionaire in order to become a U.S. citizen by posting a letter from immigration attorney Michael J. Wildes, saying “Mrs. Trump did not receive her green card through marriage. Rather, in 2000, Mrs. Trump self-sponsored herself for a green card as a model of “extraordinary ability,” and on March 19, 2001, she was admitted to the United States as a lawful permanent resident. Based on this timeline, Mrs. Trump became eligible for citizenship in 2006, after five years of continuous permanent residence.”
Huffington Post reported that the Knavses are living in the United States to care for their daughter’s child. Thus, it is easy to understand why some believe that the current U.S. immigration law favors the privileged. For instance, Melania Trump could have petitioned for her parents to immigrate to the United States. Even if Melania Trump chose not to sponsor her parents for permanent residence, Huffington Post said the law affords multiple ways to bring her family here for extended periods.
