Maybe you heard too late that Amazon was hiring 50,000 people on-the-spot on Wednesday. (They called the hiring promotion, Amazon Jobs Day.) Or else, maybe none of the 13 fulfillment centers where the jobs were located are convenient to where you live.
Or else, perhaps you were hoping that a friend or family member who needs a job might have had the chance to snag one of these positions. (It’s clear there’s a ton of interest in working for Amazon, given the sheer number of people who read and forwarded our previous story about this.)
Regardless, there’s some good news: It might not be too late.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced that it plans to hire 100,000 new associates before next summer. Obviously half of that was included in the total they planned to hire on Wednesday. But that still leaves another 50,000.
Many of those jobs are currently listed on the Amazon job listing site, at amazondelivers.jobs. They include some of the exact same types of positions and duties.
Although the “instant hire” positions that were part of Amazon Jobs Day were limited to 13 locations, the other jobs we found listed recently are in 27 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
There are often work-from-home jobs advertised as well, although the only current one in the United States as of this writing requires the applicant to be fluent in both English and Japanese. (There are work-from-home jobs in Costa Rica and South Africa, however, in case you know anyone looking for work in those countries!)
As we noted before, these are not jobs that are going to make you rich. While the starting hourly wage varies depending on the position and location, most of them hover in the $11 to $13 per hour range. However, there are both full-time and part-time positions. Many offer benefits including health insurance and even tuition reimbursement.
If you know someone who needs stable employment, they could be a good option. And if you miss out on these jobs too, not to worry: there are plenty of others. The United States unemployment rate was 4.3 percent in May, the lowest it’s been in 16 years.
