A climber in Kathmandu, Nepal, surviving a brutal sexual assault by a Yeti-like creature is fake news. There is no truth to a report that a 28-year-old man had been sexually assaulted by a yeti while climbing in Nepal. If the story sounds wild and crazy that is because it is just that as it is false.
Where did this fake news originate? World News Daily Report published the fake news article on April 19, 2018, reporting that a climber on a tourist expedition in Nepal was on the receiving end of a vicious sexual assault from a Yeti-like creature. You can read the fake news below.
Kathmandu | A tourist expedition in the Himalayas turned to nightmare after an American tourist and two local guides were savagely attacked by a creature resembling a “hairy” and “giant” humanoid reports the Kathmandu Herald.
Jason Barclay, 28, was on a solo adventure across the Himalayas with his two local sherpas when he was attacked during the night by what he believed was a bear.
The creature lashed through his tent and started to shove the half-asleep man around, who managed to stay still despite his fear.
“I thought I was going to die, so I played dead,” he told the Kathmandu Herald.
However, there is no truth to the above story. What is the problem with the story to make it false? For one thing, there is no legitimate news coverage. Also, there is no record of a “Kathmandu Herald.”
As for the photograph used in the fake news article, the origin of it can be found here. The photo is actually of alpinist Matt Helliker whose life has been shaped by mountains and coastlines, from the sea cliffs of Great Britain to Scotland’s winter mountains, the European Alps to the Greater Ranges of the Himalayas, South America and Alaska. On his website, Helliker says he has become one of the United Kingdom’s most talented and accomplished alpinists, climber and IFMGA mountain guides of his generation, with a long list of hard and impressive first and repeat ascents to his credit.
In fact, one person noticed that Helliker’s image was misappropriated for the fake news.
Hey @MattHelliker1 did you know that some website wrote about you being sexually assaulted by a Yetti? I’m not shitting you lol.https://t.co/mU5k1ZXYJD
