Non-credit classes engage students during summer break | Lifestyles


Non-credit course options allow the general public and continuing students to expand their knowledge and seek enrichment. The goals for the courses include enrichment, empowerment and engagement. Students are able to register for courses online at siue.edu/educational-outreach.

 

Conversational Japanese

The course is for students with little or no prior experience with the Japanese language. The course provides a comfortable environment in which students can acquire basic conversational skills and cultural understanding. The course costs $89 and will take place 7-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 5 to July 3 on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Beginning Spanish

The course is intended for students with little or no prior experience with the Spanish language.The course costs $89 and will take place 6-7:30 p.m. on Mondays from June 3 to June 24 on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Spanish for Health Professionals

For individuals pursuing health careers, Spanish for Health Professionals offers linguistic tools that aid in communicating with patients who have a limited proficiency in English. The course covers basic conversational skills which can be used in a healthcare context. The course costs $149 and will take place 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursdays from June 6 to August 8 on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Achieving Wellness in Everyday Life

The seminar explores the dynamic between perception and belief regarding wellness in modern society. Students will develop practices surrounding their health and wellness goals and will learn techniques for avoiding unhealthy habits. The course costs $49 and will take place 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays from June 11 to July 9 on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Ayurveda: The Science of Personalized, Natural Healthcare

Ayurveda directly translates as “the science of life.” In traditional settings, Ayurveda is combined with yoga. The course explores beliefs surrounding natural health care and its implementation into daily life. The course costs $49 and will take place 5:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays from July 10 to August 7 on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Sensing and Action

For individuals seeking an understanding of chronic pain, stiffness and limited movement, Sensing and Action aims to help in pain reduction and quality of life improvement. Students are recommended to wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat. No prior fitness experience is required. The course costs $49 and will take place 5:30-6:45 p.m. on Tuesdays from July 9 to August 6 on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Yoga for Beginners

The course focuses on the fundamentals of yoga with guided demonstrations. Students will work on improving balance, flexibility, relaxation and strength. The course costs $10 per session or $85 for all sessions and will take place 5-6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 4 to August 13 on SIUE’s main campus. There will be no session held on July 4.

 

DIY Screen Printing

The course allows students to acquire skills using embroidery hoops, Mod Podge, pencils, brushes and screen printing fabric. The course costs $25 and will take place 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, at Macoupin Art Collective in Staunton, Illinois.

 

Beginning Drawing

The course allows students to learn how to draw using fundamental techniques such as contour drawing, perspective, positive and negative space and value. The course costs $79 and will take place 5-6:30 p.m. on Thursdays from June 6 to July 18 in room 2111 of the Art and Design West building on SIUE’s main campus. There will be no class on July 4.

 

Intermediate Drawing

The course allows seasoned artists to work on refining their skills. The course costs $79 and will take place 6:30-8 p.m. on Thursdays from June 6 to July 18 in room 2103 of the Art and Design building on SIUE’s main campus. There will be no class on July 4.

 

Introduction to Wheel Throwing

The course provides students with the opportunity to develop pottery skills with wedging, centering, pulling and trimming. The course costs $120 and will take place 6-8 p.m. on Thursdays from June 6 to July 18 or July 25 to August 29 at Macoupin Art Collective in Staunton, Illinois. There will be no class on July 4.

 

Beginners Stained Glass

The course covers basic stained glass construction technique and allows participants to create a panel in the style of the famous Tiffany stained glass popularized in the 1870s to 1930s. The course costs $130 and will take place 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays from June 4 to July 9 or July 23 to August 27 at Macoupin Art Collective in Staunton, Illinois.

 

Open Figure Drawing

The course allows students to collaborate with models in order to create dynamic drawings. The course costs $8 per session or $35 for all sessions 10-12 p.m. on Fridays, June 7 to July 12, on SIUE’s main campus. There will be no session on July 4.

 

Cookie Decorating with Blackbird Bakery

The course provides students with the opportunity to learn how to create icing, mix colors, fill cookies and decorate. The course costs $55 and will take place 6-8 p.m. during three separate sessions. The sessions will be on Wednesdays from June 12 to June 19, Tuesdays from July 9 to July 16 and Tuesdays from August 20 to August 27 at Macoupin Art Collective in Staunton, Illinois.

 

Genealogy Through a Cultural Lens

Students will select an ancestor and uncover records surrounding birth, marriage, death dates and locations. The course focuses on family structures, DNA testing and resource optimization. The course costs $59 and will take place 7-8:15 p.m. on Tuesdays from May 28 to June 25 in room 1140 of the Engineering building on SIUE’s main campus and local off-campus libraries.

 

Genealogy Research

The course provides students with hands-on examples to guide them through the genealogy research process. The course costs $59 and will take place 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays from July 2 to August 6 in room 1140 of the Engineering building on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Makeup 101: Basics, Tips, Tricks and Tools

Ruthie and Mallory Kahl, freelance makeup artists, will instruct students on enhancement and minimization techniques during a live demonstration, followed by a Q&A. The course is available for students age 13 and up. The course costs $15 and will take place 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, at Macoupin Art Collective in Staunton, Illinois.

 

Makeup 201: Full Glam

Ruthie and Mallory Kahl teach students how to achieve full glam looks for special occasions. They will perform a step-by-step tutorial, followed by a Q&A. The course is available for students age 13 and up. The course costs $15 and will take place 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, at Macoupin Art Collective in Staunton, Illinois.

 

Butterflies! Get Into Formation!

The course is a seminar focused on public speaking and presentation. The course costs $49 and will take place 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, at Glen Carbon Library.

 

European Travel Seminar

The course provides students with resources on how to navigate traveling in Europe. The course costs $49 and will take place 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, at Glen Carbon Library.

 

End of Life Planning: The Life-Affirming Decisions We Make

The course explores mortality and the act of creating written plans for proceedings which take place beyond death. The course costs $59 and will take place 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 5 to June 26 on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Introduction to Beekeeping

The course outlines the basic practices of beekeeping including but not limited to bee biology, starting and inspecting a colony, colony pests and disease and obtaining products from a colony. The course costs $99 and will take place 12-5 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Women’s Introduction to Golf

The course teaches women how to putt, swing and chip on a driving range. The course costs $139 and will take place 6-7:30 p.m. on Mondays from June 3 to June 24 at Fox Creek Golf Course in Edwardsville.

 

Open Introduction to Golf

DIY Special: Build Your Own Wood Slab Coffee Table

The course allows students with no prior experience to learn the basics of building live edge slab furniture and finishing woods. The course costs $239 and will take place 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from June 11 to July 9 in room 0028 of the Engineering building on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Beer, Wine and Spirits 101

The online course allows students to be introduced to the history of the production, styles and brewing methods of beer, wine and spirits. The course costs $39, and the dates and times are to be determined.

 

Beer, Wine and Spirits 102

The course is in lab format and allows students to brew products and utilize sensory analysis. Students must be 21 years or older. The course costs $499 – including Beer, Wine and Spirits 101 – and will take place on four separate Saturday mornings. The exact dates and times are to be determined.

 

Real Estate: Buying, Selling, Investing and Making It a Career

Students will be provided with skills for buying, selling and investing in real estate. Proceeds from the course are donated to a children’s charity. The exact dates and times for the course are to be determined. The course costs $70.

 

Top Five Steps in Buying a Home

The course covers the steps, timelines and financial obligations associated with purchasing a home. The course costs $20 and will take place 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursdays from June 6 and June 13 on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Selling Your House Quickly for Top Dollar

The course covers skills associated with devising a timeline for selling a home in optimal condition at a high price. The course costs $20 and will take place 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, July 2 and July 11, on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Real Estate Investing: Making Money While You Sleep

The course examines the techniques of successful real estate investors. The course costs $20 and will take place 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, July 2 and July 11, on SIUE’s main campus.

 

How to Become a Licensed Real Estate Broker

The course provides students with information on how to become a licensed real estate broker and run a business. The course costs $20 and will take place 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursdays from July 18 and July 25 on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Key Craft

Students aged 14 and up will learn how to turn keys into decorative brooches, wind chimes, pendants and wall art. The course costs $20 and will take place 3-6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, at Macoupin Art Collective in Staunton, Illinois.

 

Intro to Yarn Bombing

Students aged six and up will learn how to create yarn bombs and work on a collaborative group piece. The course costs $20 and will take place 11-1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, and 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, at Macoupin Art Collective in Staunton, Illinois.

 

Unicorn Class

Students aged 6 and up will create unicorn personas for themselves, paint a unicorn portrait, make a unicorn puppet, make a unicorn horn and create a story book. The course costs $45 and will take place 2-3:30 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday, July 16 to July 19, at Macoupin Art Collective in Staunton, Illinois.

 

Kids Sewing

Students aged 10 and up will be allowed to create an item of clothing. They may select either a skirt, a pair of shorts or a shirt. The course costs $60 and will take place 11-1 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday, July 9 to July 12, at Macoupin Art Collective in Staunton, Illinois.

 

Youth Introduction to Golf

The course allows students to learn the rules of golf and how to putt, swing and chip. All students must bring their own set of golf clubs. The course costs $109 and will take place from 10-11:15 a.m. on Monday through Thursday, June 3 to June 6, for students aged five to nine. The course is for students aged 10-15 and will take place 10-11:30 a.m. on Monday through Thursday, June 10 to June 13, at Fox Creek Golf Course in Edwardsville.

 

LEED v4 Green Associate Exam Prep and Study Guide

Students seeking the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Associate credential from the Green Building Certification Institute will receive online exam preparation. The course is intended for professionals in design, construction, building owners, real estate, or any other interested parties. The course costs $695 and will take place June 3 to July 26. Students must register by June 7.

 

Mastering the Job Search

The course teaches students about career development through resume building, cover letter building, networking and interviewing. The course costs $59 and will take place 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 5 to June 26 on SIUE’s main campus.

 

National Food Safety Certification

Students interested in receiving national certification in food safety will take the exam and must score a 75 percent or higher. A manager book must be purchased. The course costs $89 and will take place 8-5 p.m. on Friday, June 7, in room 1140 of the Engineering building on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Metro East Economic Development Essentials Seminar

Computational Thinking in the K-12 Classroom

The course covers how computers and software can be utilized to help K-12 teachers develop a curriculum which engages students through solving problems. The course will be available 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on July 23 and July 24 on SIUE’s main campus. The course fees have not been released.

 

Microsoft Excel: Beginner Level

The course is intended for students with limited or no prior experience with Microsoft Excel. Students will work on developing skills with Excel 2016. The course costs $129 and will take place 6-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from May 28 to July 2 in room 1140 of the Engineering building on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Microsoft Excel: Intermediate Level

The course is intended for students with prior experience with Microsoft Excel. Students will work on formulas, formatting, charts, graphics and writing function with Excel 2016. The course costs $129 and will take place 6-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from July 9 to August 13 in room 1140 of the Engineering building on SIUE’s main campus.

 

Beyond Raising Awareness: Strategy and Evaluation of Advocacy Efforts

The course examines how members of nonprofit organizations can maximize their advocacy efforts. The students will be provided with the opportunity to think critically about the effectiveness of their advocacy work. The course costs $195 and will take place online July 1 to July 26. Students must register by July 5.

 

Podcasting

The course discusses the business of podcasts and allows students to work on creating the elements necessary for podcast creation. The course costs $245 and will take place online June 3 to June 28. Students must register by June 7.

Extraordinary Customer Service

Certificate in Customer Service

Students who register for the certificate course option will receive discounted rates for the courses “Keys to Customer Service” and “Extraordinary Customer Service”. Students will receive Customer Service certificates. The certificate fee is $245.

 

Introduction to Game Design

The course provides students with an introduction to game design and specifically focuses on the development of video and analog games. The course costs $245 and will take place online June 3 to June 28. Students must register by June 7.

 

Intermediate Video Game Design

The course allows students to work through the video game design process, learn about various video game genres and utilize a game development application. The course costs $245 and will take place online July 1 to July 26. Students must register by July 5.

 

Certificate in Basic Game Design

Students who register for the certificate course option will receive discounted rates for the courses “Introduction to Game Design” and “Intermediate Video Game Design” and will receive a Basic Game Design certificate. The certificate fee is $395.

 

Google Analytics

The course aims to help users who are not tech-savvy to analyze website analytics through Google Analytics in order to maximize online reach and website visitors. The course costs $195 and will take place online June 3 to June 28. Students must register by June 7.

 

Google Apps for Business

The course allows students to utilize Google’s web-based applications in an effort to become more productive business owners. The course costs $195 and will take place online July 1 to July 26. Students must register by July 5.

 

WordPress Certificate

Students seeking an understanding of how to use WordPress for website and blog design will work with widgets, plugins and other tools. The courses included are “Website Setup,” “WordPress Fundamentals” and “Advanced WordPress.” The certificate fee is $495.

The course covers the steps and elements necessary for creating a website. Students are taught about website design with WordPress. The course fee is included in the WordPress certificate fee and will take place online June 3 to June 28. Students must register by June 7.

The course allows students to work on building a simple WordPress website or blog. The course fee is included in the WordPress certificate fee and will take place online July 1 to July 26. Students must register by July 5.

 

Advanced WordPress

The course includes information about how to modify a previously set up WordPress website or blog. Students will be able to work on search engine optimization techniques. The course fee is included in the WordPress certificate fee and will take place online August 5 to August 30. Students must register by August 9.

 

Certified Personal Trainer Course

The course focuses on biomechanics, exercise physiology, fitness testing, equipment usage and health assessment. Students are able to practice the information taught in the course with training labs that include role-playing drills. Students will receive certification as a personal trainer with options to continue their education through an internship. The course costs $749 and will take place 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturdays from June 8 to July 6 in room 1304 of the Vadalabene Center on SIUE’s main campus. The course exam will take place on July 20. The class requires students to purchase a textbook for approximately $95.

 

Contract Training in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

The course is designed for HVAC professionals – engineers, designers, architects, contractors, energy auditors, technicians, facility managers and maintenance operators – and allows students to participate in custom programs for energy usage, psychrometric analysis of heating and cooling systems, load calculations, moisture transfer and the psychrometric chart. The course cost varies, and the location is to be determined.
