The project began when a massive hurricane struck the coast of the Carolinas in September of 2018. The record storm caused unimaginable damage along the eastern seaboard, causing flood and wind damage to the area as many as one million residents were evacuated. The owners of Taggart Plumbing, Mike Holinda and Visca Como, were moved by what they saw on the news and turned to Facebook to help do some good.
As the disastrous news was unfolding, the Pittsburgh plumbing company looked for ways to contribute, but they learned that most channels to donate funds were limited to specific areas. That’s when they discovered a new fund set up by the United Way. Based on their research, 100% of funds would support mid- and long-term recovery efforts through local United Way agencies in the areas affected by Florence.
Once Mike and Visca identified the credible organization which provided relief directly to storm victims, they took it to the next level by turning to social media to help raise awareness for their cause. The Pittsburgh plumber team began by creating a Facebook post, challenging their home town, then their entire service area to donate toward the Recovery Fund. The goal was to collect $7000 in just seven days.
Rather than collecting and processing the funds and then remitting payment to United Way, Mike and Visca chose to point Pittsburgh residents to give directly to the Relief Fund by placing a link on their website. This would help boost awareness of the United Way’s goal, as well as remove Taggart from any liability of financial mismanagement or tax complications that could arise from charitable donations. Soon, the story of Taggart’s action spread across the country, thanks to local news outlets picking up the tale.
Not only did the victims of the storms and flooding in the Carolinas gain help from the disaster funds, but the company noticed another benefit.
