The definition of success is up for individual interpretation as the transition into young adulthood is an unpredictable journey. During this time, precautionary advice “essential for your future” is thrown at you left and right. In efforts to avoid getting lost, it’s beneficial if you buckle in as early as possible. It’s in the hands of younger generations to redefine success as recent graduates are claiming their degree wasn’t worth the (sometimes lifelong) student debt. Finding a career that complements your identity and personality is important, and contrary to popular belief, it is easily obtainable.

Times are changing. Most Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers say their family and upbringing are most important to their identity; however, Gen Z finds identity in their academic and career achievements. Even the common viewpoint on when adulthood is reached is evolving. Gen Z marks the beginning of adulthood at obtaining financial independence, full-time employment, and moving away from home.

Success is defined along these lines. 42% of Gen Z have clear goals for the next 5 years. By age 30, these Gen Zers plan to finish their education, start a career, gain financial independence, and follow their dreams.

Along these lines, finding a career is challenging- achieving success is as well. “Wasting your time wisely” can contribute to guiding you find personal success. Exercising, listening and creating music, and doing carpentry work can help you build hands-on, formal job skills. On the other hand, you can increase your confidence by gaming, traveling, and acting.

In the words of Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos, “Stop chasing the money and start chasing the passion.” Growing up is hard. All of a sudden you’re presented with this major reality check and shift in priorities. While there are several opportunities to reap from, there are several fire-hoops along the way to jump through.
