Vertical filming has been causing controversy in the video industry for a very long time now, and some people are still finding it very hard to adopt. But one industry is leading the charge in changing people’s mindset, and that’s social media. Research afterall shows that around 94% of us now engage with media on our phones in an upright position.
Samsung once again have taken note, and hosted the world’s first vertical stage gig, which was home to the artist Mabel for the night. The night was to mark the grand opening of Samsung KX, London’s new destination to experience the “latest in culture and innovation” according to Samsung.
The stage was three tiers high and stood at around 9 meters tall and held Mabel along with her band, DJ and dancers across multiple levels. It’s a neat idea for sure. The actual gig was located under the iconic kissing point in Coal Drops Yard, which also houses the new 22,000sq ft Samsung KX experience space.
But on the flip side, how annoying is it when someone in front of you has their phone held in the air the whole time filming a gig they’re supposed to be enjoying? No one cares for your tinny, distorted video pal, put your phone away. Of course, this isn’t Samsung’s vision, and yes, the stage did look pretty sweet, but I for one who goes semi-regularly to see my favourite bands, hope it doesn’t catch on.
The Samsung KX though seems pretty cool in itself. The experiences you can find inside feature cutting-edge and modern technology from fashion, fitness, science, street dance, and more.
Tanya Weller, Director of Samsung Showcase, KX said; “We are thrilled to deliver a world first music event for our guests at Samsung KX; this experience was designed to give fans the ultimate performance tailored specifically for instant sharing. We pride ourselves on creating innovations that defy barriers and tonight’s vertical stage performance alongside a panel of thought leaders showcased how if we work together, we can do just that. We’re excited to see how Samsung can integrate into their visions of a better future by providing a destination for the latest in local culture and innovation, powered by Samsung technology.”
Mabel, comments: “London will always be close to my heart as I’ve made so much music here and I’m honoured and excited to headline the world’s first vertical gig at Samsung KX. This type of forward-thinking performance paves the way for more innovation within the city’s live music scene.”
