Sometime soon, in a city not too far away, WordCamp Sacramento (WCSAC) will be taking place. Our very own Senior Backend Engineer, Jeremy Ward, will be in attendance and presenting his talk, “Modernizing Your Development Workflow Using Composer.”
Happening this weekend, September 21-22, 2019 in Sacramento, California, WCSAC is a two-day event featuring a super-cool “Star Wars” theme, three tracks of sessions, lunch with food trucks, and a networking reception with snacks. Jeremy has presented his talk before—once last year at WordCamp Minneapolis-St. Paul, and again just this past June at WordCamp Kent—and as busy as he is working on a variety of client projects at WebDevStudios (WDS), as well as running our internal Lunch & Learn program, Jeremy managed to take some time to chat with us about his upcoming participation in WCSAC.
WDS: What made you want to attend and speak at WCSAC this year?
Jeremy: This is my first time going to WordCamp Sacramento. I had heard nothing but great things about the conference, and I’d made it a goal to speak out of state at least once this year, so it seemed like a great opportunity to give it a go. Plus, my sister lives nearby, so it’ll give me an opportunity to visit her while I’m out there.
WDS: What inspired you want to present on “Modernizing Your Development Workflow Using Composer”?
Jeremy: Composer is the de-facto package manager for the PHP community, and lots of enterprise WordPress sites leverage its capabilities to simplify their build processes and to define development tooling required to make contributions. It’s an amazing tool, and I want everyone in the WordPress community to know about it and to be able to make a determination about whether there’s a place for it in their own workflow.
WDS: What is one key point about your talk that you would like people to understand when they leave your presentation?
Jeremy: Composer makes it easy to install plugins and themes that you use to build every project, so there’s no reason to include them in version control for your projects.
WDS: What are you looking forward to at the conference?
Jeremy: I’m interested in seeing Jason Adams’s talk, “OOP + Design Patterns = Happy Developer,” because I love seeing how other engineers share information about object-oriented programming in order to help level up others. I also think Justin Doyle’s presentation, “Creating an Effective Design Process,” looks interesting. I don’t have as much involvement in the day-to-day of web design anymore, and his abstract speaks to me.
I haven’t figured out a plan for what to do and see while I’m in Sacramento just yet, but I’ll have a little time to explore while I’m in town. I’d definitely welcome any recommendations anyone might have!
Got any Sacramento recommendations for Jeremy? Tweet him at @_jmichaelward and let him know. And don’t miss his talk on Saturday, the 21st at 2:30 p.m. in Endor. Going to WCSAC? Plan ahead and peruse the entire schedule here. But if you can’t make it, follow the event on Twitter: @WC_Sacramento and #WCSAC.
The next event where you will find WDS is WordCamp US, November 1-3. We look forward to seeing you then!
