Communications

The Communications department supports leaders at all levels of the institution to promote project and campaign efforts, inform key audiences, and protect and advance Pew’s reputation. The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects. Our in-house expertise includes: strategy and message development; editorial support; design and creative services; media event planning; digital and video production; and social media. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes in order to ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew’s resources.

Position Overview

Reporting to the senior manager, editorial, the senior associate, editorial is responsible for the timely copy editing and proofreading of reports, issue briefs, fact sheets, news stories, op-ed pieces, and other content published by the department in print and online, in accordance with Pew’s quality standards and style guidelines. The senior associate also helps the editorial department maintain the Pew style guide and answer staff style and grammar queries.

Responsibilities

  • Copy edit and proofread Pew-produced content for both print and web in the most timely and effective manner, while adhering to Pew/AP style and meeting the highest editorial standards.
  • Coordinate with relevant editorial, digital and production staff as needed.
  • Maintain a general knowledge of issues related to Pew projects and campaigns in order to help ensure the highest level of editorial accuracy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include occasional writing, editorial support, and/or content editing.

   

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with a major in journalism, English, or a related subject preferred.
  • A minimum of four years of progressively responsible editing experience with an agency, news outlet, journal, corporation, or large nonprofit institution.
  • Familiarity with the AP Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style, as well as basic search engine optimization practices.
  • Top-notch organizational skills, with an ability to juggle multiple tasks, manage time effectively, analyze and solve production problems, work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment, set priorities, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including an ease in expressing complex concepts and issues in a clear, effective manner for general audiences and policy experts alike.
  • Strong commitment to accuracy and keen attention to detail.
  • Solid proofreading skills.
  • Familiarity with and working knowledge of basic office software, including Microsoft Office, as well as industry-standard software, such as Adobe Acrobat. Knowledge of WorkFront project management software and EndNote citation management software is a plus.
  • Ability to understand organizational structure and work with administrative systems. Capacity to work collaboratively to meet Pew’s goals.

Travel

Occasional travel to attend meetings and conferences.
