OAKLAND – Sucuri, the security company has released a report which states that over 50% of sites hacked in 2018 were due to SEO purposes. The main motive of hackers behind such actions is to boost the ranking of a site on various search engine platforms by manipulating their site’s SEO campaign. In the report, it was highlighted that there is a growth of 7.3 percent from the last year and the percentage of infected cases related to SEO spam campaigns have reached 51.3 percent in 2018. The report said that this specifically involves the manipulation of search engine optimization and these type of hacks have been growing at a very fast rate.
In the quarterly analysis of 2018, it was clearly visible that SEO based hacks have risen from 44 percent in 2017 and witnessed a growth of 7.3 percent in 2018. According to Sucuri, this type of hacking is very difficult to detect and it is driven by impression-based affiliate marketing with the help of a strong economic engine. The spam attacks in 2018 include SEO spamming, backdoor and malware injections. “Search Engine Poisoning (SEP)” is the most commonly used method by attackers to manipulate any site’s ranking in the search results in order to ensure monetary advantage. Under this, the technology used includes PHP, database injections or .htaccess redirects.
