Snapchat Didn’t Send A Valentine’s Day Message To Everyone, And It’s A Thing (Seriously)

Coronavirus is raging on, the Astros stole the World Series and can’t even apologize properly, chaos continues to reign in Washington DC … and, yes, the deficit is out of control.

Plus, I didn’t get a Happy Valentine’s Day message from Team Snapchat.

I mean, even Banksy dropped a new piece of art today.

I wouldn’t actually have known about the missing love letter from a remote faceless corporation, except that “Team Snapchat” is trending on Twitter right now as people are wondering whether or not the messaging and entertainment platform returns their clearly very deep affection.

If you’re wondering why on earth this is a thing, Snap (the company) makes a habit of sending each member a message on special days and holidays on Snapchat (the app). It does this from a Team Snapchat account, which functions somewhat analogously to “Tom” on Myspace, if you can remember that far back.

Basically, even if you were a complete loser on social, you had at least one friend, Tom. Tom was Tom Anderson, one of the founders of Myspace and a later president of the company.

In the same way, even if you don’t really have many friends on Snapchat (my hand is now up) and you don’t really get any messages on Snapchat (still up), you’d at least get a few messages a year from Team Snapchat.

But many didn’t get one.

Some did, however. Some did receive a Valentine’s Day missive from Snap, leading me to believe that either the company is playing favorites (unlikely), or it is simply sending them out to heavy users of the platform.

(Which would rule me out.)

Or, most likely at all, it’s a staggered send, and all of us will receive our well wishes soon enough. If not, Twitter user @jiminscumies has a suggestion:

“Delete the app, maybe they’ll care.”

OK, it’s Friday. Back to real news in my very next post, I promise. And … if you didn’t hear it anywhere else: Happy Valentine’s day from yours truly.
