Stunning video of the Milky Way will change your perspective of Earth’s rotation

While most people are aware of the fact that Earth rotates, actually visualising this movement can be tricky.

But a stunning video of the Milky Way will help to change your perspective of Earth’s rotation.

The incredible video was shot by Aryeh Nirenberg back in 2017, but has started recirculating on Twitter this week.

Mr Nirenberg said: “A timelapse of the Milky Way that was recorded using an equatorial tracking mount over a period of around 3 hours to show Earth’s rotation relative to the Milky Way.”

The video helps you to visualise Earth’s rotation

Every planet in our solar system has its own unique rotation rate. While Earth takes just 24 hours to complete one rotation, other planets take much longer.

For example, Mercury takes 59 Earth days to rotate, while Venus takes a whopping 243 Earth days to turn around just once.

The video was recirculated on Twitter by author Adam Savage, who described it as ‘gorgeous.’

He wrote: “I’m amazed that after all the magnificent time lapses of the night sky I’ve watched, that somehow I’ve never remotely imagined this specific point of view.

“What a vertiginous piece of genius, executed gorgeously. Wow.”
