The Departure Lounge is Getting Fuller These Days

The departure lounge is getting fuller these days.

A quote from a book I’ve just finished, “Made in Scotland: My Grand Adventures in a Wee Country” by Scottish comedic legend Billy Connolly.

It refers to a conversation between him and an old friend. Both men are in their 70’s, and seeing more of their friends die around them as they enter old age.

It’s a quote that’s stayed with me, as I watch my old dog Thistle struggle with his health. It also reminds me of another quote (paraphrasing here),

The worst thing about getting old is losing those that mean the most to us.

Life is a wonderful adventure. One we don’t spend nearly enough time enjoying, as we chase riches, recognition, and fame, as some BS metric of worth and value.

If our younger lives are dawn, our middle-age lives the day, and our elder lives the dusk, we need to enjoy the sunshine while it’s at its brightest.

The departure lounge is getting fuller these days.
