The Most Nature-Loving Android Phone Just Got Upgraded

The Netherlands-based smartphone maker Fairphone has just announced an update to its Android smartphone lineup — it’s called the Fairphone 3.

Fairphone 3 is a mid-ranger that’s loaded with Snapdragon 632, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage (with microSD slot), Android 9 Pie, 5.65-inch FHD+ 18:9 display, USB-C, WiFi-AC, Fingerprint scanner, and 3,000 mAh battery that its maker claims can last the entire day.

The camera department includes a 12MP rear shooter with Dual Pixel PDAF and an 8MP shooter on the front. On top of that, you also get a 3.5mm jack that’s moving away from existence on most premium smartphones nowadays. You also get a 2-year warranty with the device for an extra piece of mind.

But what makes Fairphone 3 a standout in the crowd is its modular design, which makes it super easy to repair. In the past, its older sibling Fairphone 2 became the first phone to get a repairability score of 10/10 from iFixit.

Fairphone says that “you can repair it yourself” using the screwdriver provided in the box.

With their third smartphone, Fairphone CEO Eva Gouwens says they have tried to address the “growing demand for a more ethical, reliable, sustainable phone.”

This includes various aspects of smartphone manufacturing such as using Fairtrade gold and recycled plastics, achieving fair conditions for the workers, etc. All of this should contribute to reducing the overall carbon footprint of their devices and help the environment.

The market of such eco-friendly smartphones still has a lot of scope for improvement. But, with time, we have started to see efforts from leading smartphone makers regarding the environmental and ethical aspects of their devices. However, there have been instances where the bad news comes out and reveals the ground reality.

Eva says that it’s a difficult task to disrupt an entire industry, but she has seen in the last decade how social enterprises have managed to “move entire industries by bending the rules about what’s normal and what’s right in tiny ways.”

Fairphone 3 is available for pre-order on its website with a price tag of €450.
