FEBRUARY 28: STEM Night at Gess
Do you know that careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are growing more than twice as fast as the rest of the job market? You already know how valuable Science and Math is to your child’s future success . . . but do you know how much fun it can be? Come find out at Gess Elementary on Thursday February 28, 2019. Grades 3-6 will host a Title STEM + Families Night from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the evening. This STEM event will be a fun, family-friendly event that sparks passion for STEM through activities and games for BOTH STUDENTS and THEIR FAMILIES. Dinner will be provided for the whole family. You and your child will explore … inspire … empower … and educate yourselves about how much fun STEM can be. You will also learn simple things you can do at home to foster your student’s interest in STEM. Most importantly, you will get the chance to connect with other families and Gess staff members while you and your children learn and play together. Research shows that family engagement leads to greater student success. Students with engaged parents are more likely to earn higher grades, attend school regularly, have better social skills and go on to college. We are very excited to see family engagement come alive in our schoolwide Title STEM + Families program, and we hope to see you there!

MARCH 1-2: WDFW Hunting Meeting
The public will have an opportunity to provide input on new hunting seasons proposed through 2021 for deer, elk, waterfowl, and other game species at an upcoming meeting of the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission in Spokane. Other issues on the agenda include an update on the Columbia River Policy Review, proposed land acquisitions, and other topics. The commission, a citizen panel appointed by the governor to set policy for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, will meet March 1-2 in the Inland Empire Room of the Ramada by Wyndham Spokane Airport, 8909 W. MARCH 4-5: PAP Auditions for “Sylvia”
The Park Avenue Players community theater group will be hosting auditions for their spring comedy production entitled “Sylvia” on March 4-5. The play is centered on a love triangle that develops between a husband and wife and their new female dog. Sylvia is a beautiful stray puppy that the husband Greg brings home from his walk in Central Park. She is a talking, highly energetic, and attention-craving canine. For both of them, it is love at first sight. However, when he brings the dog home, his wife Kate is less than thrilled as she sees the dog becoming a wedge dividing their marriage. The plot thickens as Greg spends more time with Sylvia, Kate becomes increasingly jealous, the marriage counselor advocates divorce and dog euthanasia, and Greg’s friend warns him of the splintering effect his dog can have on the relationship between husband and wife. The two-act play is designed for six actors. The characters of Greg, Kate, and Sylvia are line-intensive. The characters of Phyllis, Leslie, and Tom require less line memorization. Auditions will be held at the PACA Center for the Arts at 405 North Third Street East, on March 4-5 at 6 p.m.
MARCH 6: Tri County Economic Development District hosts website workshop
Tri County Economic Development District (TEDD), an Official City Partner with Google, is hosting a free Google livestream workshop for small businesses on Wednesday, March 6 from 9-10 a.m. Workshops will be held at both the TEDD office in Colville, and at the TEDD Ferry County office in Republic. March will be the perfect time to refresh your website as part of your spring cleaning to-do list. In this livestream workshop you’ll learn about search engine optimization and best practices for creating a search-friendly site. Businesses in the tri-county area are invited to attend and learn strategies to create a positive online experience for their customers and grow their business. Tri County Economic Development District is hosting a viewing party for small businesses to get together and tune in. MARCH 9: Tip-A-Cop at Fired Up Pizza
The Stevens County Law Enforcement Association is excited to join in the first Tip-A-Cop event with Fired Up Pizza on March 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. SCLEA’s mission includes improving community relations through events such as this. The goal is to serve you a great meal prepared by Fired Up and delivered to your table by members of SCLEA. We hope you get a chance to have a friendly visit with those of us who are out on the roads answering your calls for service. In turn, the tips we receive from the night go directly into the SCLEA’s Shop With a Cop event which happens in December. The better the tips, the more kids the SCLEA can help. MARCH 9: Suds N’ Spuds
The Chewelah Valley Lions are hosting Suds N’ Spuds at Quartzite Brewing on Saturday, March 9 from 4-7 p.m. or sell out. Join the Lions for dinner which is $10 and includes baked potatoes with plenty of toppings, dessert, local craft beer available for purchase separately from Quartzite Brewing, net proceeds from this event will go to the Anna Schindler Foundation. This foundation provides a place to stay for families of children with cancer.
