White Hat Search Engine Optimization is Not Dead According to SEOHost’s Terry Cane

Terry Cane, Chief Operations Officer of SEOHost.net (https://www.seohost.net), a leading domain registration, SSL service, and SEO hosting provider, has responded to a recent media account that discusses the “death” of white hat search engine optimization.

ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Terry Cane, Chief Operations Officer of SEOHost.net, a leading domain registration, SSL service, and SEO hosting provider, has responded to a recent media account that discusses the “death” of white hat search engine optimization.

Originally published in SEO publication Search Engine Journal, the article’s author, SEO expert Roger Montti, said that the division between “white hat” and “black hat” SEO is little more than a marketing tactic. White hat SEO, he explains, is a concept that exists solely for promotional purposes. At worst, black hats are those who violate Google’s guidelines. If they violate the law, Montti said, they aren’t black hats, they’re just criminals.

“I agree that a lot of the prevailing terminology around SEO is overly promotional,” said Cane. “Just like search engines have evolved, so have these two different breeds of SEO. Montti is right that Google’s guidelines are not immutable, just as he’s correct in his assertion that, by Google’s definition of SEO, black hat and white hat do not exist.”

“At the same time,” he said, “I would argue that the idea of black hat and white hat are still useful in the SEO space. The idea is that someone engaged in white hat search engine optimization has certain ethics they will not violate. That they won’t try to use any shortcuts or underhanded tactics that would harm either their users or their competition.”

Cane said such ethics should be the norm, but in any industry, there are people who are willing to go to any lengths to gain an advantage.

“It’s similar to the line that exists between black hat hackers and white hat hackers,” he said. “A black hat SEO professional will use any tactic in the book, not just for ranking purposes but with the intent of turning a profit. That includes manipulation, scamming, or a disregard for the law.”
