WordCamp Hamilton: Tacos, Innovation, and Learning!

It’s the start of the summer here in Canada, and we kicked it off with Ontario’s first WordCamp of 2019. WordCamp Hamilton took place June 1st at McMaster Innovation Park in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Celebrating its fifth year, this WordPress event featured a gender-equal range of 13 speakers across two tracks.

I created a new talk about setting up a staging site and associated workflow, which was selected by WordCamp Hamilton’s organizers. Audience members had a wide range of great and nuanced questions about the process and specific setups for creating staging sites, telling me that this topic is fresh and valuable. Hopefully, you’ll be able to see this talk at a WordCamp near you soon or on WordPress.tv.

I enjoyed Ben Dunkle’s talk, “WordPress for Visual Artists,” and was enchanted by his hand-drawn illustrations throughout the slides. During Jessica St. Peter’s presentation about project management, I was taking note after note—always a great sign of a valuable talk!

While in Hamilton, I took some time to explore the town. I enjoyed a fantastic meal at Mezcal Tacos & Tequila then visited a quaint art store named Mixed Media, both of which I recommend checking out. Walking around downtown offered many interesting sights. I love towns that integrate old buildings with new, and downtown Hamilton didn’t fail to deliver. There’s even a fun arcade with a themed bar and Tetris arcade machine.

With 130 attendees, WordCamp Hamilton offered a perfect blend of talks to a diverse crowd. A good time was had by all. If you’re in the Golden Horseshoe area, or are willing to take a one-hour comfortable bus ride from Toronto Pearson International Airport, put WordCamp Hamilton on your radar for next year.
