From WordCamp Hamilton, to WordCamp Ottawa, and now WordCamp Montreal (August 10-11, 2019), Technical Project Manager, Meagan Hanes, has been on the road exalting the importance of using a staging site. At WebDevStudios (WDS), we’re passionate about giving back, especially by speaking at and/or organizing WordCamps. Meagan definitely exemplifies this value.
So we sat down with her to have a chat about her recent WordCamp experiences and what motivates her to continually give back to the WordPress community. Here’s what she had to say:
WDS: WordCamp Montreal is going to be your third time presenting on using a staging site. Why do you feel this is such an important topic to cover?
Meagan: Next to building a website, keeping it in running condition is a challenging thing for small business owners to do. This is why I’m happy to give this talk in many locations this year. And seeing as how many WordCamps selected this presentation for their schedules, obviously it’s a hot topic!
WDS: Why do you think that WordCamps are important?
Meagan: WordCamps are the most affordable and accessible tech conferences in the world. Usually, these kinds of events cost hundreds of dollars—even thousands to attend. WordCamps are under $50 with lunches included. Just from an education point of view, it’s a great deal, but add in the networking benefits and cute swag gifts, and voilà! You’d be foolish to NOT attend a WordCamp in your area.
WDS: For many, WordCamp Montreal will be their first WordCamp experience ever. Do you have any tips for first-time WordCamp attendees?
Meagan: Review the schedule in advance. Many WordCamps do not display talk descriptions in their printed material; so reviewing in advance will let you make the best choices as to which talk to attend. Many WordCamps feature an Attendees page where you can put a face to a name and can even help you arrange a car ride or a pre-camp hangout! Follow speakers you enjoy and attendees you meet on Twitter or Facebook, and don’t hesitate to reach out with questions after the event.
WDS: What are you looking forward to most at WordCamp Montreal?
Meagan: Montreal’s WordCamp is now in its 11th year, so it’s always a pleasure to observe its operations and see the incremental changes they’ve implemented year over year. Last year, they did a great job focusing on a low-waste lunch. I’m excited to see if that persists. Montreal in August is some of the best weather ever available; so I’ll be enjoying the downtown area before and after the WordCamp, including a visit to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts for the Thierry Mugler exhibition.
